Farewell to good socialist, a good friend and an even better person
David & Ann Archibald
The bench outside the Harp is empty as the pint glass he drank from. The warm afternoon has faded, and moonlight paints the walls. He took his old grey hat and tweed and shuffled off home. Getting cold now, no point in waiting here. He will take his dram with Ken, no doubt, and they will chat about Cranston’s pace. The politics will be debated, I suppose I know the form; don’t mention certain names and they won’t get too animated. There is a guy down Shotwick way who has put away his tea things, for some reason he never went back. The walking group will look for another leader, it won’t be same, nothing ever is.
I will not see your tears again old friend; you and your brother always were great sooks. Well I am the sook now, maybe we were of a kind we three. You made a home with June, made a life, gave safety, warmth, and direction while you raised great people around you, you had that knack. You gave Ann a place of love and safety, she remembers it still. Well they will miss you, we all will, folk like you come not often.
Until the sun sets again on the Harp, and my glass is empty,

Dearest Dad,
Im going to miss you so much, you were a one off who made friends wherever you went. Always so smart and you genuinely saw the best in everything & everyone.
I’ll hang on to the white pepper pot and when next in The Travs we’ll raise a glass to you.
I see you everywhere and will love you always.
So proud to say you were my Dad.
Bye Dad. Xx

My beautiful Dad. It’s hard to imagine life without you in it. I will miss you more than I can possibly express in mere words.
But every time the sun shines high in the sky, when the swallows dip low over the fields, when the first daffodils come into bloom, and the first frosts of Winter lie on the ground, I will think of you and your unquenchable zest for the simple beauty of life.
You will live on in my memory for ever and I will miss you every day.
Unique and wonderful – my Dad xx

Denis was our true and much valued friend for more than 70 years. He loved to share with is his interest in music and books. He always worked hard to keep the red flag of socialism flying high. We shall miss him.

Dearest grandad,
I will miss you immensely, the world won’t quite be the same without you! However, I have so many fond memories that I will cherish forever! From our train journeys when I was a child through to sipping fine English ales at the pub whilst discussing times gone by! I feel lucky to have had such an amazing person in my life and to have been able to spend many a day in your company! Gone but never forgotten! Bye grandad xx

Fond memories of Denis, thinking about all the family at this time

The thing about Denis was that he had a passion for life particularly when it came to politics and music. Labour Party meetings were never the same without Denis. Although we now live in Devon and were able to get together less often, we will miss him.
