Sam Caldwell-Stott

Grandpa,
I miss you more than I can bear and have done for a while. It feels like we lost you twice.

What I can find are memories of every inch the man I looked up to growing up.

You were a constant source of guidance, love and support.

You were great at telling stories.
Jokes to cheer me up (however bad they were) and explaining things in a way I could understand and you were always patient with me – Except on the golf course.

I cherish the moments when we would momentarily stare at each other from across the room and burst out laughing for no particular reason.

You taught me to be a man of principle, to be loyal, brave and hard-working.

You taught me that it’s okay to fail, in order to learn from mistakes and appreciate success.

From everything you achieved during your career of service in the Army as an MP, to the Police Service, to raising and supporting your family.
I am extremely proud of the father figure you will always be to me and to call you my Grandpa.

In truth, we always had more of a father-son bond between us.

There’s so much more I could say but this would be a never ending letter of admiration.

To sign off, I found an adaptation of, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

It seems to resonate with me for some reason. I just picture you when I read it.

I see a beautiful city,
And a brilliant people, rising from the abyss,
I see the lives, for which I’d lay down my life,
Peaceful, useful, prosperous and happy.
I see that I hold a sanctuary in their hearts, and in
The hearts of their descendents, generations hence.
It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done.
It is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.
